Why Catnip?
Most people raise an eyebrow at this one. Catnip sounds like something for your cat, not serious mosquito protection. But peer-reviewed research from Iowa State University found that nepetalactone, the active compound in catnip, repels mosquitoes up to ten times more effectively than DEET at the same concentration. We built Bug Free Zone around it, then added nine more botanical oils to fill in where any single ingredient falls short. The science is solid and the results speak for themselves.
How is Bug Free Zone different from other natural repellents?
Most natural repellents rely on citronella alone, which wears off fast and has mixed results. We use a ten-ingredient botanical blend anchored by catnip, which is the strongest natural mosquito repellent identified in scientific research to date. It was also field-tested in BC's wilderness before it went anywhere near a bottle.
FAQ
Is Bug Free Zone safe for kids?
The formula is entirely natural, DEET-free, and contains no synthetic chemicals. For children under 2, spray onto clothing and gear rather than directly on skin, and avoid the face. For children 2 and up, apply to exposed skin as you would for adults. As always, avoid the eye area.
Is it safe during pregnancy?
We recommend checking with your healthcare provider before use. Some essential oils in the blend, including lemon eucalyptus, peppermint, and clary sage, are not recommended during pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester.
How long does one application last?
Typically 2 to 3 hours under normal conditions. Reapply sooner if you're sweating heavily or in and out of water.
Does it work on ticks and horseflies, not just mosquitoes?
Yes. Each essential oil in the blend was selected for its efficacy against multiple insects, including mosquitoes, ticks, horseflies, and other biting bugs.
Will it stain my clothes?
It's a water-based spray but contains essential oils, staining is unlikely but be careful. Let it dry on your skin before contact with light-coloured fabrics just to be safe.
Or, if spraying directly on clothing, do a test spray first.
Can I use it on my face?
Yes, but don't spray directly on your face. Spray into your hands first and pat onto skin, avoiding the eye area.
Why catnip instead of DEET?
DEET is a synthetic chemical that can irritate skin, damage certain fabrics, and isn't something most people want on their kids. Catnip contains nepetalactone, a natural compound that peer-reviewed research shows repels mosquitoes up to ten times more effectively than DEET. Same protection, none of the downsides.
