May marks the beginning of summer weather, the celebration of Mother’s Day, and Sealuxe’s new packaging launch! But did you know that May is also Skin Cancer Awareness Month?
With the warmer temperatures and longer days, it’s time to pay extra attention to your skin’s health to protect it from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in Canada. More than 8,000 new cases are diagnosed every year and is caused by damage to the skin’s DNA from UV radiation which comes from both sunlight and artificial sources like tanning beds. If you have fair skin, a history of sunburns, and a family history of skin cancer, you could be at higher risk.
Skin cancer is highly preventable and treatable, especially if caught early.
Here are some tips from Sealuxe to help you take care of your skin this May, and every day!
- Wear sunscreen. The daily application of sunscreen is one of the most important things you can do to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher. Reapply frequently (two hours is recommended) or after swimming or excessively perspiring.
- Throwing shade. The sun’s rays are at their strongest between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. so best to avoid spending extended periods of time in the direct sun during these hours. Use trees, umbrellas, or other structures. Wide-brimmed hats and sun-protective clothing also go a long way to keeping your skin safe.
- Be aware. Pay attention to your skin and any changes that may occur, such as new or changing moles, growths, or other abnormalities. Report them to your healthcare provider.
- Practice safe skincare. Using gentle and non-toxic ingredients on your skin also help prevent skin cancer and other conditions. There are many products that help your skin recover from sun damage.
