The Friendliest Paper
SeaLuxe is all about giving credit where credit is due when it comes to those who promote sustainable practices.
Today’s post is a special shout-out to the company that makes and prints our packaging – Mitchell Press.
The 90-year-old Vancouver printing company hosted its first-ever Creative Industry Showcase last week to celebrate the craft of creativity and communication. The leaders of Vancouver’s marketing, creative and graphic design communities were invited to mingle at the open house which featured tours of the high-tech presses, a trade show of local makers, a sound stage (featuring DJ Woodyard on the tables who has performed with artists such as X Presidents and The Pharcyde), not to mention a delicious dinner supplied by some of Vancouver’s most popular food trucks. Yup, it was a party alright.
The sold-out celebration also included the insanely cool Mixed Tape for a Desert Island project. Mitchell Press invited 12 artists, musicians, and writers to choose one song and describe it visually. This resulted in some incredible illustrations that were not only available to showcase attendees as take-home prints, but they were also enlarged, printed, and then mounted on several office walls (and tables!) at Mitchell Press headquarters.
It was also cool to see Mitchell Press rack up another award. Kodak presented the SONORA Plate Green Leaf Award to Mitchell Press for its outstanding environmental practices (David Mitchell accepted the award on behalf of his team. Extra fun for us to see as – full disclosure here – David is the husband of SeaLuxe founder Tanya Droege.).
Process-free Kodak SONORA printing plates save thousands of litres of water every year. It also eliminates almost all chemistry in the plate-development process.
Winning awards for environmental practices is nothing new for our favourite printing company. They were recognized by Canopy.org’s Blueline Ranking as being No. 3 among North America’s largest commercial printers, No. 2 in Canada, and No. 1 in British Columbia for their green practices. This comes hot off the heels of winning seven awards at the Canadian Print Awards this past November.
The awards aren’t a surprise to anybody who was at the open house, and witness to some of the print work on display (hello, personalized book for Serena Williams commissioned by Nike!). It’s so good to know that SeaLuxe uses a company that has embarked on a variety of ambitious reduction strategies including waste audits, reducing unnecessary energy usage, and engaging staff with zero waste recycling initiatives.
As of 2018, Mitchell Press was granted Climate Smart Certification status, having completed its first Greenhouse Emissions Inventory (GHG).
Pretty great, huh? We think so. We’re so happy to be able to offer packaging that has been made with the least-amount of impact on the environment. Not many other skincare products can say the same, we have to say (with the full realization that sounds smug. We’d sure love to see everybody doing this).
As for the party – it was great to see some of our friends from the design world as well as make some new ones. If you missed it, be sure to attend the next one because it was hella fun!
