Hello, Make It Vancouver!
Are you guys as excited for Make It Vancouver as we are?
This market starts Wednesday and runs until Sunday at the PNE Forum. It’s just the right size, we feel, with 240 Makies meaning the selection is great yet it’s manageable to walk around the tables and keep a mental list of what to buy. The selection rocks. SeaLuxe’s friends will be selling clothing, accessories, home décor, gourmet goodies, art, baby stuff, along with other handmade treasures for those special people on your list (including - cough cough – SeaLuxe soaps, candles, and other body care items!).
What’s also cool about Make It is this is its 10 year anniversary. If you happen to make it to the market for Wednesday, there will also be live entertainment and a venue-wide liquor license. Make It founder Jenna Herbut recently released her first book called Make It Happen which is a guidebook for creative entrepreneurs on how to turn their ideas into reality. She’ll be on hand during the market and selling signed copies.
Herbut’s story is a great one. She started Make It with her brother Chandler in 2008 wanting to put a new twist on the Christmas market of old. The siblings launched their first market at Yaletown’s Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre complete with a DJ and bar. Make It caught on like wildfire, so much that it expanded across western Canada to Calgary and Edmonton. In her time she got to know many entrepreneurs and, after seeing there was no real guidelines out there for people who want to make a living out of their passions, she decided to do it herself.
Like with SeaLuxe founder Tanya Droege, Herbut’s creative fires were evident when she was young. She started with bookmarks, and then sold homemade jewelry to local boutiques. Then she created a line of accessories called Booty Beltz (belts made from vintage scarves) that wound up in 120 stores across Canada, the United States, and Japan.
So, you can see why were excited to be a part of this piece of entrepreneurial history!
