A New Strain of Fact-Resistant Humans
Do you guys shake your head sometimes? We do. Regular readers of this blog know we like to bring awareness to the environment, particularly the health of the oceans. While there are good people doing good things, protecting and standing up for sustainability and a good future, there are sadly so many who deny and, worse, don’t care.
If things don’t change, we are in for a world of hurt. This is according to scientists – those at the frontlines of what’s happening to our environment.
Which brings me to this article in esteemed New Yorker magazine that caught my eye titled “Scientists: Earth Endangered By New Strain of Fact-Resistant Humans” written by Andy Borowitz. It was published in May 2015 but has once again been making the rounds online (with good reason).
“Scientists have discovered a powerful new strain of fact-resistant humans who are threatening the ability of Earth to sustain life, a sobering new study reports. The research, conducted by the University of Minnesota, identifies a virulent strain of humans who are virtually immune to any form of verifiable knowledge, leaving scientists at a loss as to how to combat them.”
The article which was shared by people such as Elon Musk, continues with quotes from a Davis Logsdon, one of the scientists that contributed to the study.
“These humans appear to have all the faculties necessary to receive and process information,” he said. “And yet, somehow, they have developed defenses that, for all intents and purposes, have rendered those faculties totally inactive.”
The clincher is the last line. “Our research is very preliminary, but it’s possible that they will become more receptive to facts once they are in an environment without food, water, or oxygen.”
Hilarious! If it weren’t so true.
