Be as Cool as a Cucumber
We’ve all heard the expression cool as a cucumber. It refers to being calm, relaxed, and unflappable even during tense situations. Some say this idea originates from the fact that the inside of cucumbers are about 20 degrees cooler than the outside air!
Cucumbers are a great do-it-yourself quick-fix for calming puffy eyes and for treating sunburn. The antioxidants in the vegetable help decrease swelling and irritation when applied to areas of affected skin. Its cooling effect also helps shrink dilated blood vessels. Its nutrients include potassium, sulfate, water, and vitamins A and C also help soothe skin conditions. Apply thin slices to your eyes and lie down for 15 minutes – same goes for sunburns – to feel and see its wonderous effects. Cucumber skin contains silica, which also helps the lightening of dark circles under your eyes.
Cucumbers also make for fantastic facial masks. A go-to favourite of mine is a basic mix of cucumber and plain yoghurt. Puree half a cucumber and mix it with two tablespoons of plain (preferably fatty) yoghurt and apply it to your skin. Allow it to sit for 20 minutes and then wash off with lukewarm water. Make sure you don’t peel the cucumber – its skin contains nutrients such as beta-carotene, fiber, and vitamin A.
The vitamin c and caffeic acid work together to help prevent winkles and ease the effects of sun damage while yoghurt is a gentle exfoliator that removes excess dirt and oil from your skin. Cucumber is also great for oily skin, as it has been known to significantly lower sebum levels.
Also – do aim to buy organic cucumbers. Unfortunately, these vegetables are notorious for accumulating pesticide residues. Another reason to love our local farmer's market!
