Pick-Me-Up Smoothie Recipe

If a seasonal cold has got you down, or you’re suffering the effects of eating too many tiny pieces of Halloween candy, then we have the pick-me up smoothie recipe for you.

This smoothie verges on being a drinkable sweet apple pie/carrot cake combination – perfect as the hour falls back this weekend and it’s suddenly dark on your drive home from work. This is a wonderful drink that is nutritious, but tastes like a treat.

We’re talking ingredients such as a banana, which ticks the boxes for magnesium and potassium intake, walnuts for their vitamin E powers (wonderful for helping the skin look dewy) as well as carrots. Carrots not only pack a vitamin C punch, but they also are a great source of beta-carotene.

As is the case for all carotenoids, beta carotene is an antioxidant which protects the body from free radicals which damage cells through oxidation. This, in turn, can lead to chronic illness. Our bodies convert beta carotene into vitamin A which is key for healthy skin, music membranes, maintaining strong immune systems, as well as good eye health and vision.

When we eat foods containing beta carotene such as carrots, broccoli, onions, peas, spinach, and squash (to name a few) our bodies convert it into only as much Vitamin A as it needs. (This is why caution must be exercised when taking Vitamin A supplements as toxicity can occur. As always, check with your doctor.)


  • ½ cup chopped carrots

  • ½ cup chopped apples

  • 1 tsp. cinnamon

  • 1 banana

  • 1 cup almond or regular milk (your preference)

  • handful crushed walnuts

  • 1 cup ice
