Biodegradable Plastics

Sealuxe Plastics What We Preach

It’s no secret Sealuxe cares about the environment. We practice what we preach. All our products now come in packaging that is recyclable or reusable (you’ve seen our new pottery candle holders, right?).

Yes, that even includes our soaps. You may have noticed while unwrapping Ritual Rose or Ocean Flora or Citrus Soleil or any of our other soap bars that, underneath the beautiful paper packaging, is the soap – wrapped in plastic of all things! As we use natural ingredients, we are required to seal our soaps to extend their shelf life. But, don’t worry, that’s no ordinary shrink wrap.

We sourced a fantastic product called Biolefin which is an oxo-biodegradable polyolefin. I know, that’s a mouthful. What it actually means is Biolefin is acid-free and will decompose, leaving behind water, carbon dioxide, and biomass. It then is assimilable by soil micro-organisms. Biolefin is USFDA approved for direct food contact and the biodegradation process begins 18 months after exposure to air, sunlight, and/or heat.

We all know discarded plastics are a pollution nightmare. It clogs up rivers, litters the ocean and beaches, killing fish, choking birds – and that’s just scratching the surface of that list. Plastics are carbon-based polymers and most are made from petroleum. It’s used for many disposable items (some would argue all items are disposable!) and, according to studies, we use traditional plastic bags on average for 12 minutes before tossing them. Yet it can apparently take 500 years before they break down (we say apparently because, as far as we know, plastics haven’t been studied for 500 years)!

“The use of plastics is a big concern of mine,” said Sealuxe founder Tanya Droege. “I’ve changed Sealuxe’s packaging to eliminate all use of conventional plastics, now using paper pouches and metal lids.

“Caring for the environment is one of my passions, and I know it also is for many fans of Sealuxe.”
